Work on Second Phase of sports complex begins

Construction of the main stadium and other additional infrastructure as part of the second phase of the Morodok Techo National Sports Complex will begin following the traditional ground breaking ceremony performed by Prime Minister Hun Sen at the site on Tuesday .


The project estimated to cost $ 157 million and fully funded by China as a gift to the Kingdom, is expected to be completed in 40 months allowing a near two year run before the 2023 SEA Games.


Situated on a 94-hectare land in Prek Tasek Commune in Russei Keo District, the main stadium will occupy all of nine hectares equipped to hold up to a 100,000 people.


The ultra modern multipurpose, Olympic standard facility will have football pitch, running track, multiple Six-storied office blocks, Eight storied Athletes Quarters including 400 rooms and two huge dining halls. Six different arenas and a weight training gym to fit in 1500 athletes are also included in the blue-print.


The Prime Minister also formally declared open the recently completed first phase which included an Indoor Arena and International standard aquatics facility made up of an Olympic-style Swimming Pool, a Warm up pool and a Platform diving pool. The facility is well equipped to handle Water Polo and Synchronized swimming.


''It is a victory for the Prime Minister;s grand vision. Cambodia's biggest ever stadium is a national monument'' said, General Secretary of the National Olympic Committee of Cambodia Vath Chamroeun.


''Our long felt need for advanced training facilities has now been met.''We heartily acknowledge China's gift, We expect the Complex to be fully operational well before the 2023 SEA Games and that would give us ample time to put all the facilities under trial while helping our own squads get the best of training" he said.
