Heng Saody is the King of Khmer Chess for 2017
By: Viravudh-Manju | 7 months ago

At the height of this year's Angkor Songkran festivities, Heng Saody elevated himself to the throne as the King of Khmer Chess at the end of the annual Oakchatrong championships in the temple town of Siem Reap last Sunday.

Undeterred by his two previous failures, Heng Saody won his final battle over seasoned Bun Kaiseng to score a decisive win on technical grounds and claim the prestigious title.

Eight players, who qualified from a pre-Songkran tournament held in March, were in the fray including two time winner Chheav Bora, But Saody's consistently good form saw him getting stronger and stronger as the event progressed.

Adding to the grandeur of the occasion the finalists sat across the table in traditional costumes dating back to the Angkoran empire as a true reflection of the royal patronage Oakchatrong enjoyed in Khmer society.

Oakchatrong is an offshoot with several variations of Chaturang which originated in India and spread to many parts of the world centuries ago.

Apart from the honor of being the best Khmer chess brain in the country, Crown, Saody received a cash prize of 12 million riels from the National Olympic Committee of Cambodia for his triumph and an additional 20 Million riel as a personal reward from Prime Minister Hun Sen, who is a big supporter of Cambodian sports in general and oakchatrong in particular.

Runner up.Kaiseng was richer by 20 million riel, 8 from NOCC and 12 from the Premier. Chhoi Vira created a sensation by beating two time winner Chheav Bora in the contest for the third place.

Winner in 2011, Vira had repeatedly failed in his subsequent attempts but recovered his winning touch to finish as high as the third best among eight contestants who qualified for this final showdown from a pre-Songkran event held at the NOCC last month in which 160 players took part.

For his effort Vira was rewarded with 4 million riel from NOCC and double that amount from the Prime Minister.

Chheav Bora got seven million riel in all.Ros Rithya, Lim Phala, My Keonimith and Kang Heng were ranked fifth to eighth with each receiving 2 million Riel from Samdech Hun Sen.
