Rio Olympics men's marathon pick for Cambodia, Neko Hiroshi repeated his last year's success in the men's Phnom Penh International Half Marathon on Sunday while Veronique Messina of France recorded her third win in four years.

The Seventh Phnom Penh Charity run supports the Kantha Bopha Children's Hospitals and other social causes and traditionally marks the birthday of Queen Mother Norodom Monineath Sihanouk.

Little over 5,300 runners assembled in front of the Royal Palace for the 21 km run and other added attractions, setting a new participation record that showed 523 overseas runners in the fray from 33 countries.

"The entries far exceeded our expectations this year. We were delighted to see so many institutions and groups taking part in big numbers. We hope this trend continues, We will eseek suggestions and opinions of the runners about upgrading this event to a full marathon next year'' Secretary General of the National Olympic Committee of Cambodia Vath Chamroeun, who is also the Secretary of State in the Ministry of Tourism said in his address to the medfa.

"Participation numbers shot up in the 10km and 3km events mainly due to greater enthusiasm shown by local runners, especially youth. More participation and success of Cambodian runners means better progression of good long distance runners in a competitive sense" Vath Chamroeun said.

Japan native Kuniaki Takizaki, better known in athletics circles as Neko Hiroshi since he assumed Cambodian nationality in 2011 turned this opportunity to prove that he is one of the country's leading long distance hopes..

Standing at 1.45 metres and weighing around 100 lbs, Hiroshi's build conceals his strong staying power. He proved his pedigree by comfortably winning the Capital's most popular run in 1 hour 16 min and 44 seconds nearly five minutes ahead of fellow Cambodian Ma Viro with another local runner Kang Thoeun back in third a minute slower.

The women"s event saw 2015 winner Messina comfortably outstay the rest of the pack in a time of 1hour 36 minutes and 11 seconds. She was way ahead of Herashchenko Nadtia of Ukraine and Natsuko Sasaki of Japan.

Cambodia grabbed all three podium places in the men's 10 km event. Van Peara stole the thunder by winning in 38 minutes and 34 seconds ahead of Sath Oudom and Chea Sampos.

Shaina Corbin of the United States won the women's 10 km run in 47 minutes and 12 seconds beating Cambodia's Phai Laurie and 14 year old Bo Samnang.

A predominantly young but large crowd turned out for the 3km fun run with Bong Hong and Pen Seyha winning the men's and women's divisions respectively.
